the Sunday house. The small place in town that scattered people kept, so that they had somewhere to come together.
German families who settled this country farmed miles apart, too far to get to town and back in a day. So they built themselves a second, tiny house in town, one room and a loft reached by a stairway on the outside wall, and they used it on Saturday nights. Market, church, the doctor, the lawyer, and everybody else who had also come in. The farms were the work. The Sunday house was where the work got connected to everything else. They still stand in Fredericksburg and Comfort, and you can walk past one this afternoon.
