The guiding idea

Hanse. An old German word for a company of merchants. The merchants of the Hanseatic League kept their own trading house in London, the Steelyard, for more than three centuries.

For more than three hundred years the merchants of the Hanseatic League kept a walled trading house of their own on the Thames in London, the Steelyard, the Stalhof in German, until Elizabeth I closed it in 1598. Cannon Street station stands on the site now. It was the oldest business bridge between Germany and England, and it worked for the reason this one does: trade between the two countries has always travelled furthest through people who already know each other.

Every club has an idea like this one, and it belongs to the place rather than to us. It is not a slogan we handed out.

The host

Leoni Parkinson holds the German end of the Bridge, from Berlin. She has spent ten years in marketing, in performance marketing and growth strategy, and she is Marketing Director at Byte Brothers Berlin, where she builds go-to-market strategies for clients, while also leading marketing and go-to-market for LevelUp, which helps businesses grow through ethical offshore hiring. Before that she led the marketing team at mobileJobs in Berlin and ran her own consultancy, The 20, built on the 80/20 principle. She studied psychology at the University of Manchester, trained as a breathwork and somatic coach, and wrote the pages on the customer relationship in François Maingret's book on ecommerce channel strategy, Online Channel Fit.

Leoni Parkinson is a real person in Berlin, not a logo. That is the point. Somebody has to know both people for an introduction to be worth anything.
